It never has for me, i always have to discover by checking this forum and manually update.
Have i completely missed what the option “Check for updates” is about? Maybe it’s for threat detection updates?

This may be because you update before SpyShelter itself does the update. The software itself waits a bit longer before updating. We post the update here first, then if nobody reports any issues we’ll update everyone later. Sometimes we don’t alert users for weeks later if we find an issue and release another update.
Ah ok, that makes a lot of sense. 
So if i ignore (probably cannot anyway!) the next forum update alert, will it then inform me that an update is available for download or will it go for the update straightaway maybe with me having to ok it?
Yes, if you do nothing at all with the SpyShelter software then eventually it will just update on its own. But for myself, I do the updates immediately when they are available and I have never had an issue.
